Swiss judges have seized a “sizeable amount of cash” hidden in a Geneva bank account linked to a British couple murdered in the Alps. The money was in the name of Surrey engineer Saad Al-Hilli, 50, and his dentist wife Iqbal, 47. The couple died in a blaze of semi-automatic gunfire which also killed Mr Al-Hilli’s 74 year old Swedish mother-in-law, Suhaila al-Allaf, as well as Sylvain Mollier, a 45-year-old cyclist and father of three.

Earlier this week detectives admitted they were still baffled as to the reason for the 5th September attack. But now Swiss prosecutor Dairo Zanni is working on the theory that the bank account is linked with the quadruple murder, and that Mr Al-Hilli may have been in Geneva shortly before the slaughter.

Sources claim that the amount of cash could be worth as much as five million pounds, although a spokesman for the Swiss prosecutors said the amount involved was far less than the millions speculated. He also said that no figure would be made public for the forseeable future.

Gas and electricity watchdog, Ofgem, today warned that Britain is likely to run out of energy generating capacity in the winter of 2015. The energy regulator said spare capacity could fall from current levels of 14% to just 4% in three years. This will make the country ever more reliant on imported gas, which will likely lead to huge price increases while also risking Britain’s self-sufficiency.

Ofgem cited closures of coal-fired power stations before schedule and EU legislation was behind the reduced capacity and urged investment. Ofgem also warned that uncertainty over the government’s plans to revamp the electricity market meant it was unclear whether new, cleaner plants would be built to bridge the gap. The lack of spare capacity would leave the country little leeway if any plants were to suffer unplanned outrages or if supply of power imports from Europe were disrupted.
